How It Works

It’s simple. Place any quantity of tablets or capsules on the Rx-4’s turntable disc surface, enter-in the counting mode and desired quantity on the keypad, press “Start” and let the Rx-4 Automatic Tablet & Capsule Counter do the rest.

The Rx-4 is fast — counting tablets and capsules at a rate of up to 500 pills per minute, and accurate, virtually eliminating miscounts.

The Rx-4 features three counting modes to perform any counting task:

SINGLE MODE (SGL)

Simply enter the quantity and the designated number of tablets or capsules is dispensed into the top collection drawer.

When the drawer is removed, excess tablets or capsules on the disc surface are automatically deposited into the bottom drawer for return to inventory.

MULTIPLE MODE (MULTI)

Ideal for pre-packing and filling multiple medication vials with the same tablets or capsules.

Enter the desired per-vial quantity and excess tablets or capsules will remain on the turntable for continuous dispensing.

Use the included vial drawer attachment for Direct Vial Filling.

INVENTORY MODE (INV)

Simply press the “Start” button and the Rx-4 will count all inventory on the turntable.

Additional features of the Rx-4 Automatic Tablet & Capsule Counter:

The Rx-4 uses a rotating turntable and an automatic gate to feed pills through an optical infrared sensing array.  This allows for fast, accurate, hands-free counting.

Listed accuracy is 99.97%, but when used as described in the included Operator’s Manual, the Rx-4 is designed to simply not miscount.

The Rx-4 will count round, aspirin-size tablets at a rate of approximately 500 per minute, and will count large capsules at approximately 350 per minute.  Even at its slowest speed, The Rx-4 is still faster and more accurate than hand-counting.

No – the Rx-4 is not a measuring device (like a pharmacy scale) so it cannot partially work.  Therefore, it requires no calibration.

The Rx-4 is capable of counting about 95% of available medications.  It can count tablets, capsules, and softgels in sizes up to 1/2″ (13mm) in diameter and 1″ (26mm) in length.  With the with the optional Large Pill Sensor Cover, it can count pills up to 3/4″ in diameter.  On the small side, it can count any pill with a minimum dimension of 3mm.

The Rx-4’s capacity varies based on the size of the tablet or capsule being counted, but the approximate capacity of the disc surface is 300 pills.  However, the Rx-4’s open design enables the user to continuously pour pills onto the turntable as they are being counted and dispensed.

Depends – semi-rounded, symmetrically-shaped items like oblong beads and hex nuts can work quite well.  Asymmetrical items with sharp corners and/or odd shapes such as screws or flat-backed crystals do not.  Also, spherical, ball-shaped items do not behave properly on the turntable.  Feel free to contact us if you want to send in some samples to test.

I purchased this RX-4 Pill counter approximately 3 months ago and have been steadily using it at a volume of 2000 per day with no issues. The product is very lightweight and it does come with the bottle filling attachment.

  2. By D. Gill on

This pill counter has exceeded our expectations. It is so much easier to fill vials and count inventory with this product. We were counting pills by hand and it took forever…now there is no more wasted time re-counting due to miscounts or interruptions. We like it a lot and it is a real time-saver.

  3. By PharmDmomma on

We were looking to make a jump from our current pour through pill counter (Kirby), and purchased this to give it a try. We fill 300+ scripts a day in our pharmacy, and we have been using “pour-through” pill counters for in our pharmacy for over 20 years. We were excited to give this machine a try but we had to send it back after just a few hours of use for several reasons.
    1. It does not count as fast as advertised. The 500 tablets per minute is only for very small tabs, I counted 300 HCTZ 12.5 mg capsules, and it took well over 1 minute.
    2. There’s no cover over the pour tray, so some of the capsules were launched in the air and on to the pharmacy counter.
    3. There’s a tab that must be adjusted for each individual drug. In order to get an accurate count you have to adjust a small metal tab on the back of the counter. It was finicky and sharp, and I’m pretty sure my techs would never do that.
    4. The trays were not high quality. They were see through, which was a nice feature, but the trays didn’t look very well finished. They also did not slide in and out of the slots very smoothly, and I was afraid that they would break or get jammed.
    5. The trays are pretty small. There is no overflow sensor, so you have to watch to see when its full to pull them out, the machine doesn’t stop counting when it senses its full.

This might work well in an environment where there is minimal pill counting. but in a fast paced retail environment, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

*Edited to add* I will say that the return process was quick and hassle free, and upon reading my review the vendor did contact me to discuss my issues with the machine. I do think it speaks volumes about a company to stand by their product. I’m adding a star to the review to reflect the optimal customer service.
